Case Study: Technology in Education

ETEC 511 | ARTIFACT THREE

This collaborative group project taught me a lot about case study creation. While looking back on this site my group members and I created, I still can't say it was perfect, but I do remember my thinking being largely shaped as a result of this process.

Perhaps my thinking was still far too linear at the time; I remember Jeff, Rob and I struggling how to shape the module of learning we chose into the framework of a case. None of us had experience designing a case study before. Thankfully, we had Steven on our team; he had much more experience on the subject and was an excellent mentor.

Part of the attraction to wanting to do this case was because my group members and I enjoyed the discourse that the readings inspired. Tufte's (2003) PowerPoint is evil, was particularly memorable because it warns readers of the "pre-scribed" lessons that the medium tends to produce. It's interesting to look back at my post during that time in the course...

Reflecting back on the educational technologies in my classroom at the time, much of my instruction centered upon using an interactive display with SMART software. Many of the lessons were prescribed and focus was mostly teacher-centered towards the front. Sure their was constructivism in my classroom, but this kind of technology tends to fight against it. Fast forward to my classroom today and I would say that it is far more mixed. I prefer the balance of mini-differentiated lessons on multiple forms of media all over my classroom. Sometimes it may be a pre-recorded tutorial on the server for students to access on mobile devices. Other times it may be a more student-driven lesson on one of several whiteboards around the class.
